The MELT Method®: How it Helps Me, Benefits My Yoga Practice, and Allows Me to Live a Healthier Life!

I was lucky enough to be one of Sue Hitzmann's students, creator of The MELT Method® (MELT®), and her invaluable teaching staff at The MELT Method® Hand and Foot Training, 15-17 January, 2016. Though I had been a self-practicing student of the MELT Method® for some months--first through my STOTT PILATES mentor and teacher, Marshall Eklund, and his Pilates studio staff--I had not been to a training this scientifically 'cutting edge' in years!

I personally attest that MELT®'s value is in eliminating chronic physical pain, inflammation, limited mobility, and other maladies, and improves not only physical balance and performance, but fosters healing, better sleep, and physical recovery. In one week of regular MELT®-ing in Spring 2015, my own chronic knee bursitis had vanished, a condition clearly a by-product of overuse in my work as a Yoga and Pilates Instructor. In Summer 2015, I continued to MELT®, as it was one of the only things I could do to attend to my own self-care after having major abdominal surgery. To my surprise--and very much like watching a 'water line' drop drastically in a matter of moments--the degree of morning belly swelling, distention, and discomfort that I arose with would disappear about half an hour or so after I had MELT®-ed my hands and feet! Needless to say, I am a convert to The MELT Method®, and believe that all people can benefit greatly from it, including my clients.

From my above 'Before' and 'After' pictures, it is easy to see why Yogis, and Pilates or fitness enthusiasts might be able to garner value from incorporating The MELT Method® into their daily practices. The below photo of myself doing the well-known Adho Mukha Svanasana/'Downward-Facing Dog' demonstrates how having nimble wrists that are able to bear weight might be a boon. Many of the so-called 'advanced' Yoga postures, for example-- arm balances like Adho Mukha Vrksasana/'Handstand' and Vasisthasana/'Side Plank'--or Pilates exercises like 'Push-Up(s)', 'Semaphore', or 'Star' call for the practitioner to have a considerable degree of wrist and scapular (shoulder) stability and mobility, however, anyone swinging a golf club, tennis racket, or carrying a child can certainly benefit from this easy, self-care technique that, in essence, enables you to act as your own 'bodyworker'.
